Artist's Comments

Cloudy Uranus shines like an emerald as the last rays of sunlight drift over its surface. In the foreground, a few rocky moons drift by, unaware of the dazzling sunset below.

Uranus may be one of the least intersting planets to paint. While similar in true color to its neighbor, Neptune, it still lacks the colorful bands and storms of the more distant planet. Which means we're left with a relatively featureless cyan sphere with a few wispy clouds. So, I took the easy way out - backlight it.

Of couse, I had to throw in a few moons - Miranda, specifically, gets a place of honor. It's not the largest, nor the most important moon orbiting Uranus. But it does happen to be the namesake of one of my cats. And she would kill me in my sleep if I didn't show her celestial sister. Besides, I had already showcased Phobos (my *other* cat's namesake) on the Mars image... so I had to be fair.

Complain all you want. You'll have to deal with the little Moodkiller herself.

I just love the colors in this one! But I've already told you that, so. . . yeah.

Hey, if anything I like this. It came out pretty well in my opinion. Oh, and I knew you had to add Mranda into the mix on this one. She may be a lil' mischief maker, but she's your lil' mischief maker. Aweosmeage work, again, brother!

You certainly are the perfectionist. Your knowledge of your subject matter is as profound as your artwork.

I initially was going to take exception to your description of Uranus as the least interesting to paint. Neptune's meteorology is calmer, softer than Uranus' and thus seemingly less interesting But your keen analysis as astronomer/ painter had me ultimately agreeing with you.

If I really wanted to give you a hard time I would point out
that Uranus' angle on which its equator rotates North/South
is more out of kilter than your image represents about another
30 degrees. I think. speculated to be the result of a collision
with a considerably sized planetoid.moon.

Thank you very much for your comments! It's one of the most useful ones I've received. And is VERY true.

If I were critiquing my own work, I would have also pointed out that some of the moons (particularly Miranda) aren't on the same plane as the rings... as they should be. They were an afterthought, and it shows. (drives me crazy, but then again, I really should have planned out the image a bit better before starting it)

Ultimately, though, issues like those and the planet angle had to be set aside for the aesthetics of the picture. With Uranus at the correct angle, the image looked lopsided. Perhaps whoever is "taking this photograph" is at an angle? ;-)

Thank you for the wholeheartedly good-hearted nature in which you've taken to respond. It's a wonderful way to be, to take
criticism with such a healthy, mature attitude.

I always believe no one should ever take themselves so seriously as to reject criticism, the ability to laugh at yourself is a wonderful trait, the only way you can evolve to becoming a better artist, person.

I do have a final comment in response to your last paragraph
(below) but before I do so want to make sure it's alright with you.
